Trails

Information: from message to transinforming

Mazur's qualitative information theory, set out in his 1970 book, builds the concept of information from the ground up, without appealing to meaning or quantity. The trail leads from a single physical state in a control path to a transmission in which the images contain exactly the same information as the originals. Each step adds one concept to the previous ones.

1/12 Step 1 of 12

1. message

Why this step: The smallest building block of the theory is not content or a sign but a difference between physical states.

A message is a physical state differing in a defined way from another physical state within a control path.

2. transverse set of messages

Why this step: We need to be able to consider the messages present at one point on the path together, hence the cross-section of the path at a single point.

A transverse set of messages is a set of messages at any point of a control path.

3/12 Step 3 of 12

3. original

Why this step: The cross-section at the output of the source gets a name of its own, because that is where the transmission of information begins.

An original is a message belonging to the transverse set of messages at the output of a source of action.

4/12 Step 4 of 12

4. image

Why this step: The cross-section at the input of the receiver is the place that information reaches; all further comparisons set images against originals.

An image is a message belonging to the transverse set of messages at the input of a receiver of action.

5/12 Step 5 of 12

5. transformation

Why this step: To speak of a connection between two messages, we need a process that turns one into the other.

A transformation is the process to which one message of an association must be subjected in order to obtain the other message of that association.

Transformacja jest to proces, jakiemu należy poddać jeden z komunikatów asocjacji, aby otrzymać drugi komunikat tej asocjacji.

6. association of messages

Why this step: Such a process is always considered for a pair of messages, and the pair becomes the basic unit of analysis.

An association of messages is an unordered pair of messages singled out from a longitudinal or transverse set of messages in a control process.

7. coding association

Why this step: A pair taken along the path, from successive places on it, describes the passage of a signal through the path.

A coding association is an association of messages from a longitudinal set of messages.

8/12 Step 8 of 12

8. code

Why this step: The transformation within such a pair is a code, which tells how a message changes on the way.

A code is the transformation of one message of a coding association into the other message of that association.

9. informational association

Why this step: A pair taken across the path, from the same place, makes it possible to compare messages standing side by side.

An informational association is an association of messages from a transverse set of messages.

10. information

Why this step: Now comes the main definition: information is not a thing but a transformation linking the messages of one cross-section.

Information is the transformation of one message of an informational association into the other message of that association.

11/12 Step 11 of 12

11. informing

Why this step: With code and information in hand, a transmission can be described as the passage of information from originals to images.

Informing is the transforming of information contained in a chain of originals into information contained in a chain of images.

12/12 Step 12 of 12

12. transinforming

Why this step: A special case is faithful transmission: the images carry the same information as the originals, although the messages themselves may be entirely different.

Transinforming is informing in which the information in the set of images is the same as the information in the set of originals.
